60th Sion Festival: the violin takes centre stage in Week 2

After the fireworks of the first weekend, from Thursday 22 August we’ll be continuing to celebrate 60 years of the Sion Festival by celebrating its emblematic instrument, the violin.

Between classical violin star Janine Jansen – who is also the Festival’s co-artistic director – and baroque violin master Giuliano Carmignola, the final of the Tibor Junior Competition will introduce you to some of the young prodigies of the bow. Ana Sokolović’s Svadba (The Wedding) will bring chamber opera to the Théâtre de Valère in Sion.

The Sion Festival continues on Tuesday 27 August at Sion Cathedral, with Janine Jansen‘s second chamber music concert. 11 magnificent concerts and shows await you until 4 September. We look forward to seeing you there!

22.08, Théâtre de Valère: Janine Jansen & the new generation

A regular guest at the Sion Festival for some time now, Janine Jansen has joined Pavel Vernikov as artistic director this year. The celebrated violinist, who can’t imagine programming without playing, will be sharing the stage with her friends and up-and-coming talents in four exceptional chamber music concerts, the first of which will explore the Slavic soul. Janine Jansen will be joined by Ruslan Talas, Noga Shaham, Daniel Blendulf, Oliver Herbert and Nikola Meeuwsen.

23.08, Théâtre de Valère: A chamber opera from the Balkans

There’s only one step from the Slavic countries to the Balkans, and you can take it when you come and discover an intimate, all-female opera, Svadba (The Wedding). This chamber opera by Serbian-Canadian composer Ana Sokolović depicts the rituals and exchanges between the (future) bride and five friends on the eve of the wedding, bringing tradition into dialogue with the contemporary world. A production by the Slovenian Chamber Music Theater that’s well worth seeing!

You’ll also be treated to an interlude with Seohyun Kim, winner of the Tibor Varga 2023 International Violin Competition.
