The first round of the Tibor Varga Competition, taking place on August 23 and 24, 2025, at the Pôle Musique, highlights the solo violin repertoire. The 28 selected candidates are invited to perform three major works: two consecutive movements from a Partita or Sonata by J. S. Bach, one of the Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27 by Eugène Ysaÿe, and the Capriccio for Solo Violin by Shin Kim, a piece specially commissioned for the 2025 edition. This demanding program allows the international jury to assess each violinist’s technique, musicality, and artistic personality. The aim of the competition is to highlight individual musical qualities, encourage personal expression, and stimulate the creativity of young artists. The jury, composed of nine members from diverse musical backgrounds, evaluates each performance with both rigor and kindness, while also providing constructive feedback to the participants. This first round, broadcast live, offers a true showcase for the new generation of violinists and represents a crucial step towards the selection of the semi-finalists.
Founded in Sion in 1967 by Tibor Varga, the International Violin Competition has become a global reference. Open to young violinists aged 17 to 30, it aims to discover the talents of tomorrow and support them in their professional development. Driven by the Sion Violin Music Foundation, the competition is recognized for its artistic standards, the quality of its international jury, and its live media coverage. The jury is chaired by Pavel Vernikov and includes eight experts. Prizes totaling over CHF 40,000 will be awarded to the best candidates.
