Tibor Varga Competition | 2nd Round
25.08.25 > 14:00

> Pôle Musique – Aula FXB

Description

The second round of the competition, scheduled for August 25 and 26, 2025, challenges candidates with the sonata repertoire for violin and piano. Violinists must perform three works: one sonata by Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Schubert, or Schumann; one sonata by Debussy, Janáček, Prokofiev, Enesco, Poulenc, Bartók, Ravel, Schoenberg, or Szymanowski; and a virtuosic piece of their choice, either for solo violin or violin with piano. This diverse program allows the jury to assess the candidates’ ability to engage in dialogue with the pianist, explore different styles, and demonstrate their virtuosity. The international jury, still chaired by Pavel Vernikov, pays special attention to the balance between technical mastery, musical sensitivity, and chamber music chemistry. This round highlights the versatility of young artists and their ability to thrive in a demanding professional context. The performances are once again streamed live, offering the audience an immersive experience in contemporary violin excellence and reinforcing the competition’s role as a springboard for international talent.

Founded in 1967 in Sion by violinist Tibor Varga, the International Violin Competition is now a must-attend event for young artists aged 17 to 30 from around the world. Organized by the Sion Violin Music Foundation, it is committed to promoting emerging talents and offering them real professional opportunities. Known for its high artistic standards, the competition features an internationally renowned jury of musicians and educators under the leadership of Pavel Vernikov. All rounds are broadcast live, giving the competition international exposure. The final also brings together pianist Adrian Oetiker, cellist Thomas Grossenbacher, and composer Shin Kim, who awards a prize for the best interpretation of his commissioned work. Over CHF 40,000 in prizes will be awarded to the winners.
