Lorenzo Viotti

Switzerland

Chief conductor

About

Born in Lausanne into a family of musicians, Lorenzo Viotti studied piano, singing, and percussion in Lyon, before attending conducting classes with Professor Georg Mark in Vienna, where he also performed as a percussionist with various renowned ensembles, including the Philharmonic Orchestra. He continued his training at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar (class of Nicolas Pasquet) and quickly won several international competitions. Among other distinctions, he was awarded the Nestlé Young Conductor Award at the Salzburg Festival (2015), the Newcomer of the Year prize at the International Opera Awards in London (2017), as well as first prizes at the conducting competitions of the Cadaqués Orchestra and the MDR Symphony Orchestra.

Considered one of the most dynamic young conductors of his generation, Lorenzo Viotti is currently the Music Director of the Dutch National Opera, where in 2025 he will conduct two of the season’s most anticipated productions: the Amsterdam premiere of Die Fledermaus staged by Barrie Kosky, and a new production of Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, directed by Barbara Horáková. He also continues his fruitful collaboration with the Zurich Opera House, conducting Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt in a staging by Dmitri Tcherniakov. On the symphonic side, he will conclude his tenure as Music Director of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra with six programs at the Concertgebouw and a tour across the country.
