Singer Maria João is one of the few Portuguese jazz artists to have achieved success and recognition outside her native country. It all began for her at the Hot Club of the Portuguese Jazz School, where she quickly made a name for herself. Her voice with its characteristic timbre, combined with a consummate art of improvisation, makes her one of the great jazzwomen of our time. Her impressive discography testifies to her curiosity and her perpetual evolution. Her album dedicated to Brazilian popular music – João, a collaboration with the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra – Amoras e Framboesas, is one of many treasures.
