Record participation for the Tibor Varga Competition 2021

The current health crisis has not prevented the 57th Tibor Varga International Violin Competition
from being a success, on the contrary, it even seems to have boosted participation, which has
reached a new record: 124 young people under 26 years of age from all over the world have
registered for the competition, 32% more than for the last edition. However, only 28 candidates
were selected and invited to take part in the public rounds, which will take place in Sion from 28
August to 4 September 2021.

The jury chose 28 young violinists on the basis of a video, 14 come from Europe, 6 from America and 8

September, the lucky few will take part in the final in two parts – one consisting of chamber music and
the other with orchestra. All these rounds will be open to the public. However, the number of spectators
will be limited due to health restrictions. All rounds of the competition will also be livestreamed on our
website. The second evening of the final will be broadcast on the regional television channel Canal 9.

There are six prizes at stake: A First, Second and Third Prize, an Audience Prize, a Youth Jury Prize
and a Special Prize for the best interpretation of the compulsory work, a creation by the French composer of Armenian origin Michel Petrossian, commissioned for the Competition.

The jury will be composed of soloists and teachers from the international music scene: Salvatore
Accardo (Italy), President, Kolja Blacher (Germany), Friedemann Eichhorn (Germany), Koichiro
Harada (Japan), Yuzuko Horigome (Belgium – Japan), Ida Kavafian (USA) and Pavel Vernikov
(Ukraine – Israel). Konstantin Lifschitz, pianist (Russia), and Marc Coppey, cellist (France), will join
the jury for the final and will play in trio with the finalists in the chamber music round.

The younger generation of musicians will also have their say: The competition management will appoint
a youth jury, which will be completely independent of the international Jury.

The International Tibor Varga Competition is held every two years. The last edition took place in 2019.

The Tibor Varga International Violin Competition is one of three summer events organised by the Sion
Violin Music Foundation. All three have a long tradition. From 19 July to 21 August, the 58th Tibor Varga
Music Academy will take place, while from 20 August to 5 September the 56th Sion Festival will be held.
