Il Suonar Parlante Orchestra was founded in 2007 by viola da gamba soloist Vittorio Ghielmi and Argentinian singer Graciela Gibelli. The orchestra gained international recognition as orchestra in residence at the 46th Semana de Musica Religiosa de Cuenca in Madrid, where they premiered a major production of Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri with the Swedish choir Rilke Ensemblen and American filmmaker Marc Reshovsky.
Since then, Il Suonar Parlante has performed in prestigious venues worldwide, including the Berliner Philharmonie, Salzburg Festspiele, and Auditorium Nacional Madrid. They have been orchestra in residence at the Stuttgart Festspiele (2010), Segovia Music Festival (2011), and Bozar Music Festival in Brussels.
Their acclaimed recordings include Barbarian Beauty, featuring concertos for viola da gamba and orchestra with cymbalon virtuoso Marcel Comendant, and The Passion of Musick with Dorothee Oberlinger, which won the Echo Klassik Prize in 2015. A new album, Gypsys Baroque with violinist Stano Palúch, is in preparation.
The name Il Suonar Parlante, coined by Niccolò Paganini, refers to a technique where instruments imitate the human voice. Since 2002, the ensemble’s musicians have explored this sound ideal, led by Ghielmi’s vision as soloist, conductor, composer, and teacher, redefining the sound of the viola da gamba and European classical repertoire.
