Three classical singers, accompanied by the best folk instrumentalists from Armenia: this is The Naghash Ensemble, which marries Armenian spirituality with contemporary post-minimalism against a backdrop of unbridled jazz energy. Based on the poems of the medieval writer and priest Mkrtich Naghash, the ensemble’s music is gripping. Exiled for a large part of his life, the 15th-century poet wrote down striking meditations. From these texts, the Armenian-American composer John Hodian creates a moving music, at the crossroads of folk and classical music. The spirit of ancient Armenia, reinvented for the 21st century, emerges from these melodies.
