Description

Felix Froschhammer, violin

Guilhaume Santana, bassoon

Christian Chamorel, piano

A wide-ranging musical journey awaits us in this concert bringing together three professors of the Tibor Varga Academy: Felix Froschhammer on violin, Guilhaume Santana on bassoon, and Christian Chamorel on piano.

The program opens with Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 18, his last sonata for the instrument. Despite the indication “leichte Klaviersonate” (“easy piano sonata”), this work demands great virtuosity. Both technical and contrapuntal in its writing, this so-called “Hunt” Sonata—named after the horn calls evoked in the first movement—unfolds in three movements: Allegro, Adagio, and Allegretto.

We then dive into the Romantic world of Brahms with his Third Sonata for Violin and Piano, composed near Lake Thun. A masterpiece of the composer, it opens in a mysterious atmosphere before bursting into powerful expressive intensity. The sublime Adagio, of profound emotional depth, is followed by a more whimsical Poco presto con sentimento, before an epic finale reconnects with the energy of the opening movement.

A 20th-century Swiss composer, Otmar Nussio wrote in 1953 a virtuosic piece intended for the Geneva Competition, for bassoon and string orchestra. Based on an arietta by the Baroque composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, the work explores—through ten variations—the full richness and diversity of the bassoon’s expressive possibilities.

To conclude, the three professors come together for Glinka’s Trio pathétique in D minor, in its version for violin, piano, and bassoon. Marked by deep emotional intensity, the work leads us from a solemn Allegro moderato, through the central Adagio, the expressive heart of the trio, to the dramatic resolution brought by the finale.

A musical journey rich in contrasts, brought to life by the three professors of the Tibor Varga Academy’s winter session.
