The Philharmonic Brass

Brass Ensemble

About

The Philharmonic Brass was founded in 2022 by brass and percussion members of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras, alongside colleagues from other renowned orchestras.

From their very first steps together it became clear to everyone involved that an extraordinary formation had come together: sixteen brass players and four percussionists whose spontaneous musical interactions were so inspiring that it sparked the desire for an official project — in fact, for a debut album.

Fascinated by the ensemble’s sonic vision and passion, world-renowned conductor Tugan Sokhiev agreed to join the project without hesitation: “Of course YES, I love Brass!”. Under his musical direction, a new language of sound emerged — one that opened previously unimagined dimensions for all involved. The intensity of the recording sessions, which often continued for hours without interruption, culminated in true “fireworks” of music and laid the foundation for a deep artistic and personal bond between the conductor and the ensemble.

Even beyond the studio, a spirit of creativity prevailed: cooking, laughter, and conversations about future projects filled their shared breaks — a reflection of the profound friendship that forms the heart of „Overture,” which was released as the ensemble’s debut album in 2023 and features virtuoso showpieces from Beethoven to Gershwin – works that have remained staples in every concert of The Philharmonic Brass.

Under the direction of Maestro Riccardo Muti, the ensemble’s second studio recording project “ITALIANA!” followed in March 2025. The album spans the gamut of Italian masterworks ranging from the Baroque to the Romantic eras to the 20th century with pieces by Albinoni, Verdi or Respighi.

Original arrangements created for the ensemble showcase the performers’ virtuosity as well as the individual characteristics of their instruments, while always honoring a deep regard for the composition. The resulting color spectrum offers unexpected soundscapes and awakens emotions that encourage a new approach to these masterpieces.

Since its founding, the ensemble has been invited to the Rheingau, Athens Epidaurus or the Liszt festivals, and has performed at concert halls such as the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Festspielhaus Salzburg, and the Philharmonie Luxembourg. The first tour to Asia in early 2026 included stops in Taipei, Seoul and Beijing, and was met with great critical acclaim.
