About

Violinist and Educator, Mami Teshigawara began her musical education at the age of four at the Toho Gakuen School of Music for Children in Sendai, where she studied piano and solfège.

 

She commenced violin studies at the age of six. After graduating from the Music Department of Toho Girls’ High School, she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance from the Toho Gakuen College of Music, followed by completion of its Graduate Course.

 

Her principal mentors include Saburo Sumi, Akiko Tatsumi, and Gerhard Bosse. During her graduate studies, she received a scholarship from Yale University to attend the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in the United States, where she studied chamber music under the Tokyo Quartet.

 

She later continued her artistic development in Europe, studying with Yfrah Neaman and Herman Krebbers.
Since her student years, Ms. Teshigawara has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, appearing in concerto engagements, solo recitals, and collaborative performances with distinguished artists both in Japan and internationally.

 

Her orchestral appearances include performances with the NHK Symphony Orchestra and other leading ensembles. Her artistic versatility encompasses not only classical repertoire but also contemporary premieres and cross-genre collaborations in pop and jazz. Alongside her performing career, she has been deeply committed to music education.

 

She began teaching at her alma mater, the Toho Gakuen School of Music for Children, and has since devoted herself to nurturing young talent.
Her students have earned top honors at numerous prestigious international competitions, including the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition,the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists, the Leonid Kogan International Competition, the International Louis Spohr competition, the Arthur Grumiaux International Competition and the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition.

 

In Japan, Ms. Teshigawara has served as a juror for many national competitions, such as the Czech International Music Competition, Japan Junior Violin Competition, Toho Gakuen National Junior Competition, All Japan Junior Classical Music Competition, Cecilia International Music Competition, Japan Sogaku Competition, and the Japan Classical Music Competition.

 

Her contributions to pedagogy have been recognized with multiple awards for excellence in teaching.
She currently serves as a lecturer at the Toho Gakuen School of Music for Children and Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, and is the founder and director of the Amoroso Music Institute.

 

As Vice President of the Tokyo International Violin Association, she has developed a unique examination system specializing in foundational violin techniques, offering children a systematic and innovative approach to mastering correct playing methods. She also organizes masterclasses featuring internationally renowned violinists and pedagogues.

 

Her teaching expertise is highly regarded, and she is frequently invited to give masterclasses both in Japan and abroad. In addition, she has translated pedagogical publications from Edition Peters, including Simon Fischer’s Violin Basics, helping to introduce leading international teaching methods to violin students in Japan.She is Vice President of the Tokyo International Violin Association and a member of the Japan String Teachers Association (JASTA).
