Una Madre is a multidisciplinary performance blending theatre, music and live art. Directed by Amahí Saraceni and inspired by Colm Tóibín’s novel The Testament of Mary, it gives voice to Mary, the mother of Christ —a figure traditionally silent in religious narratives. Here, it is not the sacred icon but the voice of a mother that emerges: Mary recounts her story, her son’s growing distance, her concern about his disciples, and the pain of his death.

This intimate and profoundly human perspective is brought to life with great intensity by actress Vittoria Scognamiglio. Her performance moves seamlessly between French, Italian and Neapolitan dialect, each language conveying a distinct emotion or memory.

Music plays a central role in this creation. Composer and performer Alvise Sinivia has devised a unique sonic installation: dismantled pianos reduced to their soundboards, connected by nylon strings. These structures become a monumental instrument. By moving and rubbing the strings, the musician generates vibrations that resonate throughout the space. His body becomes a “living bow”, transforming movement into sound. Light and scenography further enhance the mysterious and poetic atmosphere.

At the crossroads of concert, installation and theatre, Una Madre offers a powerful sensory experience, exploring universal themes that continue to resonate today.

Enjoy 30 to 40 minutes of guided listening, context, discussion, and presentation in French. Six of our concerts are preceded by a free introductory talk.
