Born in 1978 into a family of musicians, Alexander Gordon began studying the viola in the class of Elena Ozol at the Gnessin School of Music in Moscow, before continuing his training in Germany with Marius Nichiteanu, Michael Kugel and Tabea Zimmermann. He is a much sought-after soloist, performing in the most renowned concert halls and has already made numerous recordings for Chandos, LPO Live, Naxos and Toccata Classics. In parallel to this rich career, Alexander discovered a passion for conducting and plunged seriously into this new discipline, with Vladimir Jurowski and Vassily Sinaisky as his teachers. He now conducts regularly throughout Europe.
Alexander Gordon has achieved considerable international recognition as a soloist, conductor, chamber musician and teacher. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Alexander changed his family name from Zemtsov to Gordon, protesting against Russian aggression and the use of the letters “Z O V” as symbols of Vladimir Putin’s regime.
