Born into a musical family (his father is none other than the musicologist Bob Gilmore and his grandfather the conductor Lev Markiz), the violinist Benjamin Marquise Gilmore grew up in England where he studied with Natalia Boyarskaya at the Yehudi Menuhin School, before continuing his studies in Vienna, under the supervision of (among others) Pavel Vernikov, Julian Rachlin and Miriam Fried. First prize at the Oskar Back Competition in Amsterdam and winner of the Joseph Joachim Competition in Hanover and Mozart in Salzburg, he is currently one of two concertmasters of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and holds the same position in the Philharmonia Orchestra in London.
