The Louis Moret Foundation welcomes the professors of the Tibor Varga Academy for a chamber music concert bringing together bassoon, viola and piano.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Canon perpetuus opens the programme. It belongs to The Musical Offering BWV 1079, a collection of contrapuntal works based on a theme given to Bach by Frederick II of Prussia. A true summit of Baroque counterpoint, the work explores the many possibilities of transforming and combining a single musical idea.
With Lachrymae, Benjamin Britten brings together viola and piano in a series of variations inspired by a song by the 16th-century composer John Dowland. Entitled If my complaints could passions move, the melancholy theme finds a particularly deep resonance in the sonority of the viola. Exceptionally for a variation work, the original theme is only revealed at the very end of the piece.
Primarily known for his works for clarinet, Paul Jeanjean also composed extensively for other wind instruments, notably for bassoon in his Prélude et Scherzo. Written as a competition piece for the Paris Conservatoire, the work is built on a strong contrast between a lyrical and expressive prelude and a lively scherzo filled with staccato articulation and virtuosic passages. It highlights the agility, precision and virtuosity of the bassoonist.
Ludwig van Beethoven composed the Trio in B-flat major, Op. 11, nicknamed the “Gassenhauer” in his youth. The nickname refers to the finale, based on a very popular tune by the Viennese composer Joseph Weigl. Originally written for clarinet, cello and piano, this youthful trio is one of the rare works in which Beethoven pays tribute to the entertainment music of his time. Structured in three movements, it opens with a confident first movement, followed by a deeply lyrical adagio, before concluding with a brilliant and highly energetic finale.
