Miguel Ferreira, guitar

In the unique setting of the underground lake and its exceptional acoustics, professor George Vassilev, accompanied by two of his students, invites us on a journey through the richness and diversity of the guitar repertoire. In solo, duo and trio performances, the strings resonate through a programme combining original works and arrangements.

The concert opens with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and one of his six Viennese Sonatinas, adaptations of his famous divertimenti for wind instruments. Elegant and graceful, it introduces a programme devoted to some of the emblematic works of the guitar repertoire.

Among them is Asturias by Isaac Albéniz, now a cornerstone of the guitar repertoire although originally composed for piano. His contemporary Enrique Granados is represented by the intermezzo from his opera Goyescas, whose colours evoke Spanish music. Another major Spanish figure, Joaquín Turina greatly enriched the guitar repertoire, notably with his Sonata Op. 61, which helped establish the guitar as a concert instrument.

The programme continues with excerpts from Eduardo Sainz de la Maza’s poetic cycle Platero y yo, inspired by the famous book by Juan Ramón Jiménez. The work delicately portrays the daily life of a small donkey in Andalusia.

With El Decamerón Negro, Leo Brouwer transforms the guitar into a true sound theatre. Inspired by African legends, this emblematic work unfolds a remarkable richness of timbre and narrative contrasts. Finally, Baião de Gude by Paulo Bellinati immerses us in the popular and rhythmic world of northeastern Brazil through highly virtuosic writing.
