José-Daniel Castellon, transverse flute
Veronica Kuijken, piano
José-Daniel Castellon, joined by pianist Veronica Kuijken, invites us on a journey through the flute repertoire, from Georg Philipp Telemann to contemporary music.
Three works in this programme originate from the violin repertoire, whose range adapts remarkably well to that of the flute. Among them is Franz Schubert’s Sonatina in D Major, D.384, composed in 1816 when the composer was only nineteen years old. Full of freshness and elegance, the work unfolds through a bright and lyrical opening movement, a gently melancholic Andante, and a lively, energetic finale. Also drawn from the violin repertoire is Richard Strauss’s Sonata, written in 1887 and now regarded as one of his most celebrated chamber music works. Highly virtuosic, the sonata displays intense lyricism, particularly in the central movement, Improvisation: Andante cantabile, a passage of profound expressiveness. Finally, Eugène Ysaÿe’s Poème Élégiaque, a major work of the violin repertoire, stands out for its dark, passionate, and introspective atmosphere.
Several contemporary works punctuate the programme. Featured among them is Eolia by the French composer Philippe Hurel, a virtuosic piece with a richly textured musical language that demands exceptional technical agility. The Japanese composer Tōru Takemitsu wrote Voice in a single day in 1971. This unique work combines Eastern influences with contemporary Western compositional techniques, while exploring a wide range of extended performance practices and theatrical elements, including spoken text and microtonal singing. A particularly striking musical experience.
