To mark this anniversary, the traditional “Musique en fête” day will honour the great Hungarian violinist and teacher Tibor Varga, who became more Valaisan than a native of the canton. From dawn to dusk, no fewer than ten free concerts will be held throughout the Valais capital. As you stroll through the old town, you will rediscover familiar places and explore new ones.
The musical influence of Valais today bears the unmistakable traces of Tibor Varga’s deep attachment to this region, as he wrote in 1993: “In Valais, the climate is relatively dry, but very pure. Here, my violin sounds much clearer and much more alive”. The story begins in 1956, when life took him to the Valais village of Grimisuat. A few years later, he made Sion the epicentre of the violin, founding the Tibor Varga Music Academy, the Sion Festival and the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition Sion Valais. Throughout his life, Tibor Varga made a passionate contribution to the musical life and cultural development of his adopted canton.
In partnership with the Conservatoire Cantonal, the HEMU – Valais-Wallis and Schubertiade Sion, this day will pay tribute to this great violinist, conductor and teacher. We look forward to seeing many of you there!
