Description

Chamber music with soprano, piano, and cello | 6 candidates

  • Thomas Grossenbacher, cello
  • Adrian Oetiker, piano
  • Ekaterina Shelehova, soprano

The last stage for our violinists before reaching the final! For this third round, only six candidates remain to take on a particularly demanding challenge in this chamber music event. In dialogue with soprano Ekaterina Shelehova, pianist Adrian Oetiker, and cellist Thomas Grossenbacher, they must combine perfect mastery of their score with attentive listening and flawless adaptability.

This year, two works for soprano, violin, cello, and piano take us into very contrasting worlds. With great poetry, Stella Viatoris reveals all the melodic genius and harmonic audacity of Amy Beach, a romantic composer at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Composed between 1810 and 1813 at the request of folk song collector George Thomson, Beethoven’s Irish Songs WoO 152 offer a completely different atmosphere. On a simple melody, Come draw me round a cheerful ring evokes a joyful and convivial scene tinged with a certain melancholy, sublimated by an accompaniment that puts piano, strings, and voice in dialogue.

The candidates then face one of the great trios in the repertoire for violin, cello, and piano. This formation, developed by Beethoven and Schubert, is akin to an intimate musical conversation, a dialogue among friends in which each instrument brings its voice to the collective narrative. A unique connection is then created between the musicians, who, to achieve sonic unity, develop a spirit of collaboration, deep empathy, and mutual understanding.

This third round brings out the uniqueness of each candidate while revealing their art of dialogue and listening within the group.
