Description

For this final concert of the 2025 Tibor Varga Winter Academy, Florent Héau (clarinet), Fabien Thouand (oboe), and Christian Chamorel (piano) take us on a beautiful journey through the history of music. From German Romanticism, with its three great masters Schubert, Schumann, and C.M. von Weber, to 20th-century Russian music with Shostakovich and Marina Dranishnikova, this particularly rich program highlights the great complicity between these three instruments.

Schubert composed Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock) for soprano, clarinet, and piano at the very end of his life. This sublime work connects with great poetry, nature, and human emotion. A passionate and equally poetic dialogue unfolds in Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro Op. 70, originally composed for horn. Between lyricism and virtuosity, a duality unique to this deeply romantic composer emerges. Then, a true masterpiece of the clarinet and piano repertoire, Weber’s Grand Duo Concertant reveals the virtuosity of these two instruments through an ebullient writing style. A dynamic exchange full of surprises!

Just as lively, Shostakovich’s Five Pieces include a prelude, an elegy, and three different dances, forming a captivating series of scenes. Finally, Marina Dranishnikova’s Poem for oboe and piano, composed in 1994, offers us a moment of pure meditation during which the full expressiveness of the oboe unfolds.

A journey to the heart of the finest chamber music repertoire, not to be missed!
