Description

Jean-Louis Capezzali, oboe

Sophie Le Denmat, oboe

Accompanied by one of their students, our two professors, Jean-Louis Capezzali and Sophie Le Denmat, present a concert highlighting the full expressive richness of the oboe and the English horn through a programme that journeys between dance and opera.

The two instruments first follow the paths of lyrical singing with two emblematic pages by Mozart: Là ci darem la mano, from Don Giovanni, and the Queen of the Night’s aria from The Magic Flute. The Romantic world is then evoked through the passionate impulses of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, followed by the timeless poetry of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Beethoven’s Trio for Two Oboes and English Horn showcases a particularly rare wind ensemble. This brilliant and virtuosic work unfolds across four contrasting movements: from the lively and cheerful opening Allegro to the brilliant and rhythmic final Presto, passing through a highly expressive cantabile Adagio and a characterful Menuet.

The twentieth century is also represented through the French composer Eugène Bozza, who transports us beneath the sun of Provence in Bergers de Provence, where starry nights mingle with village festivities. The journey continues to Great Britain with Gordon Jacob, whose profound knowledge of wind instruments is reflected in his Two Pieces for Oboes and English Horn.

Finally, South American rhythms bring this musical journey to a close. From Piazzolla’s Tango-Études to Kalke’s arrangements, the programme is imbued with the colours of tango, mambo and bossa nova, culminating in a highly festive finale.
