If you thought you knew everything about Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the Janoska Ensemble will surprise you in this final concert of the Sion Festival 2025 with a bold reinvention of this masterpiece, blending classical, jazz, Latin, and Balkan influences. This unique quartet, made up of three brothers from Bratislava – Ondrej, František, and Roman Janoska – and their brother-in-law Julius Darvas, is above all a family story. Together, they have forged the “Janoska style,” a unique signature combining virtuosity, improvisation, and inexhaustible creativity.
With this reinterpretation, they invite us on a musical journey spanning nearly three centuries. Drawing on the sonnets preceding each concerto, they revisit The Four Seasons with both respect and freedom, integrating touches of samba, tango, jazz, and even Irish music. Each movement includes an original section composed by František Janoska, featuring a true orchestral dimension where the musicians’ virtuosity shines. The Irish Wedding, which concludes La Primavera, is inspired by Celtic traditions in a lively 12/8 dance. L’Estate begins as a South American waltz, ignited by samba rhythms. Finally, L’Inverno ends with Peace and Love Forever, a finale where rhythmic diversity creates unity, illustrating the last lines of Vivaldi’s sonnet: “It is winter, which nonetheless brings its delights.”
