This “Church Trail,” conceived by our co-artistic director Janine Jansen, invites audiences to join an itinerant musical experience, with three very different concerts. Two routes are offered, each providing a unique perspective on the world of Dmitri Shostakovich.
With Route A, you will discover his Violin Sonata, performed at the Protestant Church by Boris Brovtsyn and Nikola Meeuwsen. Composed for the 60th birthday of David Oistrakh, this work of great dramatic intensity reflects the tensions of the composer’s late period.
The journey continues at St. Théodule Church with the flutist Lucie Horsch, who offers an immersion into the heart of Baroque Europe, from the Dutch Golden Age to Italian influences. Around Jacob van Eyck, Dario Castello, Georg Philipp Telemann, and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, she highlights the richness and expressivity of Baroque music.
The route concludes with one of the absolute pinnacles of chamber music: the Quintet for two cellos by Franz Schubert. A luminous work filled with contrasting emotions, it offers an intense conclusion, suspended between depth and serenity.
As the closing event of the 62nd Sion Festival, this Church Trail sketches a musical journey between introspection, virtuosity, and light, through the emblematic venues of the city of Sion.
