Description

A poet’s love affair

In 1840, Schumann was gripped by a sudden creative fever. The human voice took center stage. “I’d like to sing myself to death, like a nightingale”, he wrote to his fiancée Clara; and, indeed, the Lieder flowed from his pen at an astonishing speed. Among the compositions of this fruitful year, the Dichterliebe take pride of place; born of an artistic encounter with the poetry of Heinrich Heine, they unfold, in 16 Lieder, the sentimental journey of a young man, from the birth of love to the disillusionment of unrequited love. Schumann’s fine, delicate writing marries the subtlest nuances of the poetic text to bring this inner journey closer to the heart.

Melodies by Bellini and large excerpts from De Falla’s Chansons espagnoles round off this dense, intimate program.
