M. Godard et Y. Gaudin, The Breath of Hope
Part symphonic poem, part musical tale, Le Souffle de l’espoir offers, in words and notes, a sensitive reflection on the loss of loved ones. Based on the writings of Yves Gaudin, this multi-faceted show is dedicated to the memory of Stéphane Chapuis, “accordionist, accomplished musician and friend who died too soon”. This friendship, at the origin of the project, overflows from each measure and illuminates the sound material with its warmth. Michel Godard’s remarkably expressive music insinuates itself – as an accomplice – into all the interstices of the beautiful text carried by the narrator Roland Vouilloz, and the smiling shadow of the departed friend seems to hover over the artists.
Orchestral musicians, soloists, actors, find in this soil a miraculous space of understanding, where each one can exist, by the grace of a shared breath – light of hope. The singular timbre of the snake (instrument-world, where this breath swirls), will affix its melancholy, its roundness and its mystery, like a poetic seal, on a poignant and serene meditation.
The ancients believed, some precious texts affirm, that musical science had the power to suspend time and, momentarily at least, to annihilate death itself. In its own modest but fervent way, Le Souffle de l’espoir rekindles this sacred flame.
